Diwali Is in Eleven Days. NYE Is the One You Can Still Change.

Garba just ended. The next two occasions are already decided or nearly decided.

The Read

Navratri finished on 20 October. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, which puts the party weekend on the 7th and the spending window more or less now. New Year's Eve is about nine weeks out.

Three concentrated occasions inside eleven weeks, each one pulling hundreds of events into the same handful of nights. Garba is done and the results are in. Diwali is too close to change much. NYE is the only one of the three where decisions made this week still matter.

So here is what the last few weeks should have taught anyone selling into an occasion.

Occasions compress everything at once

An ordinary event competes for attention on its own schedule. An occasion event competes with every other event on exactly the same nights, marketed in exactly the same two or three weeks, to exactly the same people.

Three things happen simultaneously. Ad costs rise, because every event, retailer and brand in the country is bidding for the same attention in the same fortnight. Feeds saturate, so the fifth Diwali party someone scrolls past gets a fraction of the attention the first one got. And the audience makes one decision for the occasion rather than several, because almost nobody attends four Diwali parties.

That last point is the one that matters. You are not competing for a share of someone's going-out budget. You are competing to be the single answer to one question, asked once, usually in conversation with friends, often a week or two before the date.

The cheap window is the one nobody is bidding in

The reason to start early is not that early buyers are plentiful. During Garba, Diwali and NYE, most people buy late, as they always do in this market.

The reason to start early is that attention is cheaper and scarcer before the rush. Four or five weeks out, you are one of a handful of events talking about an occasion rather than one of two hundred. The same budget buys more reach, more completed views and more recall, simply because fewer people are competing for the slot.

Then, when the decision moment arrives and everyone floods in, you are not introducing yourself. You are being recognised.

Planning convention puts effective recall at roughly three to four meaningful exposures before a decision. That is difficult to achieve in the final ten days when every advertiser in the country is in the auction and frequency is expensive. It is straightforward four weeks earlier, when it is not.

The practical version for NYE: the awareness spend starts in the first half of November, the consideration layer builds through late November and early December, and the conversion push runs from mid-December. Most Indian NYE events will do all three in the last fortnight and pay a premium for the privilege.

Everyone sells the occasion. Almost nobody sells themselves.

Look at Garba creative from this season, or Diwali creative this week. Most of it is interchangeable. Lights, outfits, music, the word itself, a venue name, a price. Strip the logo off and you could not tell two events apart.

That is a positioning failure, and it is worse during an occasion than at any other time, because the occasion is the one thing you share with every competitor. Selling it harder does not help you. It helps the category.

The fix is small and it is not about being wildly different. It is about being legible as one specific thing.

An authentic, traditional, family Diwali evening is a position. A loud Gen Z party where Diwali is the excuse is a position. A premium, limited capacity, adults only night is a position. A Diwali event for people who do not have family in the city is a position, and a very good one. Each of those attracts a different person, prices differently, needs different creative and excludes someone, which is the point.

A Diwali party is not a position. It is a category.

The test is simple. If a competing event could use your copy without changing anything but the name, you have not positioned yourself. During an occasion, when fifty events are describing the same night, the one that says what kind of night it is gets remembered. The rest compete on price and proximity.

This applies with even more force to diaspora events abroad, where the pool of organisers is smaller but every one of them is selling the same occasion to the same community in the same two weeks.

For NYE, starting now

Pick the position first, before any creative gets made. One sentence describing who this night is for and who it is not for.

Start awareness spend in the first half of November, while the auction still belongs to Diwali and not yet to you.

Build frequency deliberately rather than hoping for it. Three or four exposures spread across six weeks is achievable. The same frequency in the final ten days is not, at any sensible cost.

Hold real budget for the last three weeks, because that is still when most tickets will sell. Early spending does not replace the late push. It makes the late push cheaper, because you are converting people who already know who you are.

The events that sell out on an occasion are rarely the ones that spent the most in the final fortnight. They are the ones that were already familiar by the time the question got asked.
